The Well
The Well is widely considered to be one of the most ambitious mixed-use development projects in Canada. Located in the heart of downtown Toronto’s west end, the improvements include 1.2 million square feet of office, 500,000 square feet of retail and food services, and 1,700 multi-family units, both apartment and condominium units, all encompassed within six high-rise buildings that rise above and are interconnected by a 3-story podium. Completed in 2023, The Well is designed to accommodate approximately 22,000 people daily, including its residential residents, the employees working in its office and retail components, and visitors, shoppers, and other pedestrians. Many technological advances and high-tech amenities and services were incorporated into the project. Most significantly, a cistern, or underground reservoir, was excavated deep below the 7.7-acre site and connected to a Deep Lake Water Cooling (DLWC) system. Owned and operated by Enwave, a low-carbon energy provider in Toronto, it’s the largest DLWC system in the world and is used to cool and heat over 100 building in the city. The cistern beneath The Well is the inspiration for the property’s name. https://thewelltoronto.com/ | https://www.tridel.com/thewell/

Tridel
The Tridel Group of Companies is one of Canada’s largest privately held residential real estate groups, with a focus on development, sales, construction, property management, and other related services. In business for over 90 years, during which time, they’ve built over 90,000 homes, Tridel is one of Canada’s leading condominium developers. Their recognition by industry groups for green building development is extensive and ongoing, including multiple awards of note from the Ontario Home Builders’ Association (OHBA) and the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD). They build with intentional and thoughtful design to conserve more energy, water, and resources than any standard Building Code compliant buildings. Projects completed by Tridel typically consume 34% less electricity, 57% less natural gas, and 43% less potable water than average, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 41%. https://www.tridel.com/

Winson Chan, Vice President of Sales Development at Tridel

With over 30 years of experience in the real estate industry, Mr. Chan currently leads Tridel’s award-winning sales department as its Vice President. Given that Tridel is Canada’s largest condo builder, it’s factually correct to note that no one in Canada is responsible for more new condo sales than Mr. Chan. In addition to his many years of service at Tridel, Mr. Chan has also served as National President of the Real Estate Institute of Canada (REIC), Regional Director of Ontario for the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), and member of the Board of Directors of both the Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA Global) and the Canada Chapter of FIABCI, the International Real Estate Federation. Cities across Canada and the globe are wrestling with pressures from climate change, health, and inequality. What solutions can the built environment offer for these complex challenges? Professor Matti Siemiatycki will discuss the practice of mixing uses in one building, particularly combining residential or commercial space with large-scale public amenities such as schools or cultural facilities. Called the creative mixed-use model, these development projects are bringing together public, private, and non-profit uses in innovative ways, expanding the focus of downtowns from a business district to an activity district.
